Muscle Injury

topic posted Tue, September 6, 2005 - 9:46 AM by  Unsubscribed
I was doing dumbell pullovers with relatively light dumbells (this is a knew exercise in my routine) pulled my the tricep on one of my arms. The muscle felt tight on the way down so I was going slowly but as I started lifting upwards if just gave out. I stopped the workout immediately as the pain was sharp and intense, it still feels a swollen.

Now I'm taking ibuprofen, and was wondering how long I should let it heal for?

Things are finally going well now and I'd prefer not to take an extended break.

    Hi Spartacus:

One of the risks with pullovers is that your tricep is at it's weakest (stretched as long as it can be) at the point when the resistance is at or near it's greatest. As a result injuries like yours can happen.

Another issue I have with pullovers is that what many people are doing them for (trying to expand their ribcage) just ain't gonna happen, not without a scalpel, anyway.

Since the pain was pretty bad you were wise in giving it a rest. Many people, including me in my youth, have tried "working through" injures, only to make then worse.
Wait until the pain is at least nearly gone then make sure to warm up thoroughly before lifting. I'd also advise you to do other exercises then the one that hurt you, at least your first few times back.

One last point, avoid becoming too dependent on ibuprofen. It may make you feel better but taking drugs too often or for too long isn't a great choice.

    Good Luck!

    Andy
