In yesterday's New York Daily News there was an article about the effect music has on exercise performance. According to several studies cited in the article people who exercise to music work out at a higher intensity, have greater motivation and adherence to their exercise plan and are distracted from their perceived exhaustion point. Do you exercise to music and if so how helpful do you think it is?

Re: Music and Exercise Performance
Thu, April 21, 2005 - 9:40 AMIf I'm on a treadmill, music is mandatory. (It is usually necessary just to mask the noise of the TV blaring away in the gym that nobody seems to be watching anyway.) I do tend to perform better with music in that context than without and it does distract me from focusing on minor discomforts and distractions. If I'm running near traffic, I just do without music in the interest of safety.

Re: Music and Exercise Performance
Sun, April 24, 2005 - 3:17 PMWhen I am lifting weights I don't bother with music b/c it is just a nuisance to juggle my (rather old-fashioned) CD player. However, music is an absolute must for all my cardio workouts. In fact, if my batteries die, and the piped music in the gym does not appeal to me, it is really a struggle to complete my workout. On the other hand, with my music playing smoothly, I can certainly be distracted from my exhaustion point and keep going for a very long and intense cardio workout.

Re: Music and Exercise Performance
Sun, April 24, 2005 - 3:43 PMI definately prefer working out with music.
When I lift I like hard rock or punk music, its definately a mental thing and I just feel like I can lift more. I periodize my lifting cycle and can listen to softer music and just "zen out" when I'm doing a lot of volume training, but when I lift heavy harder music does the trick.
During cardio I like really upbeat European dance/trance music which makes the workout go a lot faster. (I'm not big on cardio so a workout that feels faster is a good thing).

Re: Music and Exercise Performance
Wed, April 27, 2005 - 12:14 PMHi...I'm a new "triber" but had to post to this subject!!! If I go to the gym with my music..I can easily stay for 2 hours without getting bored. Plus, it's nice not to have to chit-chat with others when I am trying to work out! I have an aerobics room to myself if I go in between classes.....so I usually take advantage of the time to work on choregraphy for upcoming events...plus I would much rather dance for cardio then do the treadmill thing! -

Wed, April 27, 2005 - 1:17 PMHi Jahan and welcome to the Tribe. I've been a consultant on 5 Bellydance fitness DVDs so it's always interesting to me to hear a dancer's perspective.

Re: Music and Exercise Performance
Sun, May 15, 2005 - 11:56 PMCan I ask which videos you consulted on? I am always intrigued by the process that must go into producing these videos. I believe that the current facination with bellydance is a trend that will continue to grow! Once I found out that I could maintain my body almost solely by dance...I was sold!!!! I still LOVE the gym...luckily I have the use of a HUGE aerobics room, so I always include a little bit dance into each workout. -

Mon, May 16, 2005 - 4:57 AMHi Jahan:
Ironically one of the bellydance DVDs I worked on is by a well known dancer and instructor from New York named Jehan. It's called "The Ultimate Bellydance Fitness Workout." I also consulted on "The Bellydance For Bodyshaping Series" by Neon. It's made up of four DVDs: "Abs", "Buns and Thighs", "Floorwork" and "Upperbody."
In addition, a DVD that I was the creator of is called "The Bedroom Workout For Men." It's a fitness DVD dedicated to improving men's sexual performance through exercises specific to that purpose. -

Sun, May 22, 2005 - 9:20 PMHHHmmmm...what an interesting background! I LOVE Jehan!!! I have been trying to buy her videos....always being re-ordered! She is the most amazing dancer...I took a workshop with her a while back. Her technique is flawless...and feeling is truely Arabic. I know that she was feeling self conscious about weight gain after having her baby....but, not all dancers should have to be so skinny!!! It's about time people realize what a great workout bellydance is ...thanks for helping to spread the word!
