Caloric restriction for longer life

Brand new to the group. Has anyone here experimented with caloric restriction as a method to thwart aging? Several great books on it written by the late Gerontologist Dr. Roy Walford. I understand his daughter has a book out on the same subject now. The premise is that if you moderately restrict calories (up to about 30%) while maintaining very good nutrition, you increase the maximum lifespan of a person or animal significantly. It is currently the only scientifically proven method for slowing the aging process. Hundreds of studies support it's use for animals and the preliminary human studies are bearing out as well.

    Interesting concept...

most people take in slightly more calories than they burn and end up weighing much more at say 50 years old than they did at 20.

I'll be 51 this year and weigh just as much as I did when I was 20 and am in pretty much the same shape as when I was 20 (if not better in some aspects). This mostly due to regular vigorous exercise and the good fortune of a very accurate appestat.

As to there being a link of causality between the eating as many calories as I burn (calorie restriction) and my good health, I would lean more towards the fact that I exercise regularly.

Now that I've though about it more, my brother is an example of the opposite...

he weighs about the same as he did 40 years ago, but he is in terrible shape because he NEVER exercises.

I think exercise is the key, food intake is secondary.
